Extra Curricular Activities

Aadhish, a student of class VI, was a gifted with the talent of drawing. His ability to sketch and paint was way beyond students of his age. The only issue he had that he was not able to give as much time as he has the regular studies and homework to be done and neither did the school had taken any initiative to hone his skills. Seeing his frustration and struggle to cope up with the regular curriculum and trying to find time pursue his talent, his parents took the decision of changing his school and find an institute which also gives importance to co-curricular and extra-curricular activity. Aadhish’s parents are the example of today’s generation of parents who are all set to give the best to their child and not stick to only the school curriculum for their child’s development.

We have many times acknowledged the importance of extracurricular activities in the development of well-rounded students. But, and that’s a big but, many schools treat such activities are privileges, not rights or entitlements. Extra-curricular activities are those which are beyond the prescribed curriculum of the school. The foremost activity in schools is education. But the fast changing world has forced schools to initiate extra-curricular activities for an overall developed personality of the child.

A closer look at what extra-curricular activities actually aims to build in a child will help us see the vital role it has to play in a child’s development. The extracurricular program includes, for example, drama,  music, and athletics; and has evolved substantially. The most significant part of this evolution is the role extracurricular activities now play in the experience of our students. For the vast majority of students, these endeavors are critical to their social and emotional development and will help define who they are. In higher education also, college applications place a great deal of importance on what students choose to do beyond the classroom in addition to their academic performance.

Extracurricular activities help students gain experience in a variety of areas that will enhance their future. Through participation in sports, students learn cooperation, sportsman spirit, teamwork and time management. By being part of organizing councils /projects, students learn responsibility, problem solving and communication. Learning to stick with an activity from start to finish is another important lesson of extracurricular activities. Extracurricular activities can also help students discover hidden talents, meet people from various backgrounds, and learn about things outside their own environment making them confident individuals.

It is essential that students should choose the right activity. If a student enjoys outdoor activities, he or she may want to look into taking up any of the sports or trekking. If a student enjoys reading he or she may also enjoy literary clubs, writing clubs or journalism activities. Extracurricular activities are also a good way to learn appreciation for new and different activities. Choosing something outside a student's comfort zone widens horizons and expands knowledge. Being open to new avenues by joining the newspaper staff, the computer club or the voluntary organizations will expose students to new people and new ideas. Time away from the school day through participation in extracurricular activities can also serve as an outlet for stress and a way to build confidence and self-esteem. Children need encouragement to pursue

their dreams. Not only will it empower them to make their own decisions, they will also be given a chance to gain vital experience and skills that will lead them on the path to their future.

Extracurricular activities are important, but they shouldn't take up all of a student's time outside the school day. There should still be time for homework, chores, relaxing, and spending time with friends and family. A combination of all these are an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Parents should ensure that their children are not exerting themselves by taking on too many activities. Let there be a right reason behind enrolling for such activities and just follow because it is the “in” thing today. Extracurricular activities should complement a student's life, not complicate it.
