“There is no future in any job;
The future lies in the man who holds a job.”
Effective utilization of available resources, information and exploring the potentials is an important issue and it is in this light that synchrony of personal aspirations and global requirements assume relevance. The LPG syndrome [Liberalisation, Privatisation & globalization] is creating waves of unsurety and insecurity. The recession, the boom, the demand-supply gap prevailing in certain industries, the ever increasing demand for certain professionals and also the lack of formally trained professionals; all this leads to an ambiguous situation thus making a career choice more complex. One reason is that, India has primarily
been a labour intensive country, but now the focus is changing from labour intensive to people centric. A shift is also seen in the preference from the conventional occupations to more coordinative, challenging, dynamic and service oriented careers. One more reason is also because of the shift from the age-old concept of life-long employment to Employability.
In spite of the upheaval of the trends, certain sectors will always be in demand [because of their inherent nature]. The whole world has recognized India's future in knowledge-based industries. Every industry will have to move with time and evolve accordingly, though a few sectors catering to the needs of the ever-increasing race of humans – the service providers like Hospitality & Leisure, Healthcare & Pharmaceuticals, Consultancy, Entertainment Management as a function and IT .
A closer look [along with a different perspective] into these careers would help one delve into the essence of each sector. Certain characteristics strongly depict and stand as a point of differentiation for any type of career. Inherent aptitudes, personality traits, genuine interest, hard work coupled with formal education & training, makes success in any field workable.
Hospitality and leisure industry is one of the most upcoming careers and sought after by many budding professionals. The variety of national as well as international chain of hotels, resorts, clubs, etc. the human force with a sound background of the soft skills have changed the entire concept of hospitality. A rapidly growing middle class, the advent of corporate incentive travel and the multinational companies into India has boosted prospects for tourism. It does promise good growth prospects for those who possess the people skills, diplomacy & tact (to handle all kinds of customers & their demands), and a very well adjusted personality. Returns are good for the professionally trained personnel. Self-employment is the answer to the young enterprising blood, but that has to be coupled with adequate industry exposure and practical knowledge.
India not only has a strong legacy of traditional medicines but also possesses a strong base of trained doctors and paramedical professionals and other people with greater expertise than other countries. With lower cost of service and a growing reputation for expertise in building healthcare instruments, the domestic healthcare industry has strengths comparable with the information technology sector. With the growth of population and number of health concerns a wide scope for health centers and research institutes would be developed. Technological advances are seen very prominently in the field of healthcare and pharmaceuticals. Pharmaceuticals have been the backbone of the healthcare industry and will continue to be so. Research & development in this field has a vast scope and appears to be very promising. Knowledge of the subject, a continuous urge to update oneself and an inquisitive mind will ensure the sustainability in this industry
Entertainment , in whatever form, is always a boon; be it the end-users of entertainment or the providers [earning the returns]. A fresh inflow of talent in the media is always welcomed. With the emergence of new channels and thereby an increase in the programmes, many of the aspirants [at all levels] can become a little more hopeful. Radio jockeying , music albums, television serials, theatre, live-shows, talk-shows, news channels, etc. the entertainment world is acquiring a different status itself. The Entertainment business in India is growing at a phenomenal pace and there is increasing demand for trendy indoor entertainment. Entertainment will also look at a different aspect with centres like Theatre multiplexes, video arcades, food courts, shopping malls, theme parks, Pool Clubs, Amusement Parks, etc. are expected in most of the metropolitan and semi- urban cities by the millennium. Competition in this industry, like any other industry cannot be overlooked. Creativity is the key to survive in this field, be on-screen or off the screen performances..
Marketing, human resources, systems, operations and finance have to be viewed as functions rather than only as specialisations. It has to be viewed with broader perspective, which is aimed at enhancing the quality of life. Short-term course or any long-term course, what one learns and implements, is that what counts.
India is being regarded the World over for it's skilled IT Professionals. Their services are effectively being used in other fields also, ranging from food processing to research & development and banking to communication and so on. IT enabled services, software development, and training have been identified as the major focus sectors. The IT industry is young; the average age of professionals is lower than any other industry. The availability of skilled, qualified professionals is hardly able to meet the requirement, leaving a large gap to be filled by those with a learning attitude & an urge to update oneself continuously, ambition, aptitude and willingness to work hard.
Growth is and will continue in the managerial, technical and professional occupations. There will be evolution and one has to re-invent continuously. So keep evolving.
